Die Vielfalt der Nutzpflanzen - The Diversity of Crops

About the Exhibition

Artists from Germany and Austria are preparing for the exhibition: They visit farmers and pomologists; they grow vegetables in their gardens or even on their balconies. They research old crops, observe and draw their chosen plants, waiting for the special moment that inspires them to create a unique design.

They will have completed their works by the end of 2024. Some artists from Poland, Slovenia and Switzerland will also submit works. The selection made by the jury will be presented in the tranquil, rural town of Thüngersheim in Bavaria, where the gallery Forum Botanische Kunst is located.

Flora’s New Masters

About this Exhibition

The exhibition of native plants of Germany and Austria includes 40 works by 26 botanical artists who submitted to an open competition. The selected works are presented in the historical rooms of the Forum Botanische Kunst in Thuengersheim, Bavaria from 18 May to 22 July 2018. The Forum Botanische Kunst is the first privately held gallery solely dedicated to botanical art in Europe. The show is accompanied by a presentation of international artists of the gallery.

Parallel to this contemporary exhibition, there is a remarkable presentation of historical notabilities of this genre shown in the museum WeinKulturGaden in Thüngersheim. Kunstkabinett Strehler, art dealers from Sindelfingen, present about 50 original copperplate-engravings and watercolors by Maria Sibylla Merian, Georg Hoefnagel, of the “Hortus Eystettensis” and other masters of art history.

On the Worldwide Day of Botanical Art, the gallery Forum Botanische Kunst offered an exclusive artists’ preview. It was open for all botanical artists and was the biggest get-together of German and Austrian Artists up to now. We thought the opportunity for artists to meet each other is the most important thing we can do on this special day. In the evening, the two exhibitions were opened one after the other. Around 150 guests enjoyed regarding the historic artworks in the medieval rooms of the WeinKulturGaden and the walk to the Forum Botanische Kunst, a renaissance building hosting the contemporary artworks. A string quartet accompanied the visitors along this journey through time.

The German / Austrian contributions show a very detailed cross section of Germany’s and Austria’s flora. The artworks show plants native to the North Sea, herbage and plants of meadows and fields as well as trees, shrubs and vegetation of forests and floodplain forests. Finally, the exhibition shows a wide range of the variegated flora of the Alps.

Rumex crispus
The curled dock occurs in arable and meadowland, waste places, on sand dunes, and shingle. It is capable of behaving as an annual, biennial or perennial. Curled dock reproduces from seed and by vegetative regeneration of the underground organs. The seeds are capable of surviving in undisturbed soil for more than 70 years and seed numbers in soil have been estimated at 5 million per acre. This unusual watercolor painting by Andreas Hentrich shows a detail of its leave and focuses on the beauty and splendid color of a plant that is commonly regarded as weed.

The glasswort is a genus of about 30 species of annual succulent herbs in the amaranth family. It is native to salt marshes and beaches and grows on the border of the North Sea. The halophytic plant accumulates salt in its leaves and stems. The ashes of dried, burnt glassworts contain large amounts of potash and were formerly used in glassmaking. This artwork by Verena Redmann is drawn in coloured pencil and ink.

Margareta Pertl - Rosa pendulina - Aquarell und Bleistift.jpg

It occurs in the Alps, Carpathians, Balkan Mountains, Apennines and Pyrenees. Rose hips and leaves are known for their medicinal value and are widely used in food products. This artwork by Margareta Pertl shows all elements of fruit, foliage and blossom.
